Chemical Labels

Chemical labels are used to identify and communicate information about hazardous materials and chemicals to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory requirements. These labels are typically required by law and provide critical information to workers, emergency responders, and others who may come into contact with hazardous materials.

Chemical labels can provide a range of information about a substance, including its identity, hazards, safe handling procedures, emergency response instructions, and personal protective equipment requirements. The labels can also include hazard symbols, pictograms, and other visual aids to help quickly identify the type of hazard.

Useful Information

The information required on a chemical label depends on the specific regulations and standards in place in the country or region where the chemical is being used or transported. However, there are some common elements that are typically required on a chemical label, including:

Product identity: The name or identifier of the substance or mixture, as well as any common names or synonyms.

Hazard statements: Statements that describe the nature and degree of the hazard(s) posed by the substance or mixture, such as “flammable,” “toxic,” or “corrosive.”

Precautionary statements: Statements that provide information about how to handle, store, and use the substance or mixture safely, as well as information about any protective equipment that may be required.

Signal words: Words that indicate the severity of the hazard(s) posed by the substance or mixture, such as “danger” or “warning.”

Pictograms: Graphic symbols that provide a quick visual representation of the type of hazard(s) posed by the substance or mixture.

Supplier information: The name, address, and phone number of the supplier or manufacturer of the substance or mixture.

Batch or lot number: A unique identifier that allows the substance or mixture to be traced back to a specific production batch or lot.

Additional information may also be required, depending on the specific regulations and standards in place. For example, the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) requires additional information on chemical labels, including the name and concentration of any hazardous ingredients, the physical and chemical properties of the substance or mixture, and information about the environmental hazards posed by the substance or mixture.

Labelling Materials for Chemical Products

Waterproof Plastic Labels

Waterproof polypropylene labels are an ideal option for chemical products due to their resistance to water, chemicals, and oils. They can withstand harsh environments and are able to maintain their legibility and adherence throughout the product’s lifespan. These labels are highly durable and can withstand extreme temperatures, making them a practical choice for chemical products that require safe handling and storage.

For extra water resistance, we recommend a gloss laminate over the top to ensure that the print is as protected as the label.

Transparent Labels

Transparent plastic labels are a practical choice for labeling chemical products due to their durability and resistance to moisture, oils, and chemicals. These labels provide a clear and unobstructed view of the product, making it easy to identify the contents and any warnings or instructions. They are also versatile and can be printed with a range of designs, colours, and fonts to meet the branding and regulatory requirements. Transparent plastic labels are particularly useful for products with unique shapes or colours that need to be highlighted, as they do not detract from the product’s appearance

For extra water resistance, we recommend a gloss laminate over the top to ensure that the print is as protected as the label.

Semi-Gloss Paper Labels

Semi-gloss paper labels are a practical choice for increasing visibility with chemical products due to their reflective properties and high contrast. The semi-gloss finish provides a smooth and slightly shiny surface that reflects light, making the label easier to read and the product more noticeable. This makes it an ideal choice for labels that need to stand out on a shelf or in a warehouse. Semi-gloss paper is also a popular and cost-effective material that is widely available and easy to print on, making it a practical choice for chemical labeling needs.

A gloss varnish and gloss laminate are excellent options for chemical labels due to their ability to provide an extra layer of protection and enhance the label’s visual appeal. The gloss varnish provides a high level of glossiness, creating a luxurious and shiny finish that adds to the product’s premium look. Similarly, a gloss laminate provides a high level of glossiness, but it is thicker and more durable than a gloss varnish, making it a suitable option for products that require more protection.

Recommended adhesives:

You can also choose to use a freezer adhesive, which is useful for chemical labels because they are designed to withstand extremely low temperatures and provide a strong and durable bond. Chemical products often need to be stored in freezers or other cold storage areas, and regular adhesives may fail to stick to the surface in such conditions. Freezer adhesives, on the other hand, are formulated to maintain their adhesive properties even at very low temperatures, ensuring that the label remains in place and legible. These adhesives are also resistant to moisture, chemicals, and oils, which makes them ideal for labeling chemical products that need to be stored in cold and damp environments
